Vamanam (Vaman) Treatment in Pune

Therapeutic emesis for complaints of kapha and the upper body, given under supervision after several days of preparation.

In brief

Vamanam, also written Vaman, is the first of the five Panchakarma procedures: a supervised, induced emesis that Ayurveda uses to clear excess kapha from the upper body. At Shree Skin & Hair Clinic on Senapati Bapat Road, Pune, it is planned and supervised by Dr. Nileema Shisode, M.D. (Ayurved) in Kayachikitsa-Panchakarma, after a detailed history and several days of preparation.

What Vamanam is used for

Ayurveda advises Vamanam for long-standing complaints of the upper body and of kapha. At the clinic it is used in:

  • Chronic migraine and headache
  • Scalp psoriasis
  • Chronic urticaria and itching
  • Chronic sinusitis and rhinitis, often together with Nasya
  • Correcting metabolism as part of weight management

How Vamanam is done

  1. A consultation and history, to decide whether Vamanam suits you
  2. Preparation over several days: medicated ghee taken by mouth, then oil massage and steam
  3. On the day, in the morning, you are given liquids to drink and then the emetic medicine, and the doctor stays with you throughout
  4. Rest afterwards, followed by a set diet that returns to normal food in steps over the next few days

Before and after

Plan the procedure for days when you can rest. Follow the diet you are given exactly, both during the preparation and afterwards: the graded diet is part of the treatment, not an extra. Classical texts place Vamanam in spring, though the doctor decides the timing for each person.

When Vamanam is not advised

Vamanam is not given during pregnancy, to young children or the very elderly, or to anyone who is weak or underweight. It is avoided in heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and bleeding disorders. If it does not suit you, the doctor will advise a milder procedure such as Virechan or medicine alone.

Questions patients ask

Is Vamanam safe?

It is a classical procedure that is safe when the person is chosen correctly, prepared properly and supervised by a doctor trained in Panchakarma. It is not suitable for everyone, which is why it starts with a consultation.

How long does Vamanam take?

The procedure itself takes one morning. The preparation before it and the graded diet after it take several days more, so allow for the whole course when you plan it.

Which season is best for Vamanam?

Classical texts place Vamanam in Vasant, the spring season. The doctor may advise it at another time if your complaint calls for it.
