Raktamokshan and Leech Therapy in Pune

Bloodletting by a fine incision or by leeches, for skin disease and eczema.

In brief

Raktamokshan is the Panchakarma procedure of letting a small quantity of blood, which Ayurveda uses where the blood is held to be vitiated. At Shree Skin & Hair Clinic on Senapati Bapat Road, Pune, Dr. Nileema Shisode, M.D. (Ayurved) in Kayachikitsa-Panchakarma, performs it either with a fine incision or by applying leeches, mainly for skin disease and eczema.

What Raktamokshan is used for

  • Skin disease
  • Eczema
  • High blood pressure, alongside your regular treatment

It is usually one part of a plan that also includes internal medicine and diet.

The two methods

  • Fine incision. A small, controlled quantity of blood is let from a vein under clean conditions.
  • Leech application. Medicinal leeches are placed on the affected area and removed when they have fed. This is the gentler method and suits a small patch of skin.

The doctor chooses the method from the complaint and the area to be treated.

Before and after

Eat a light meal before you come and tell the doctor about every medicine you take. The site is dressed afterwards. Keep it clean and dry, and rest for the day.

When Raktamokshan is not advised

It is not done in anaemia, in bleeding disorders, for people taking blood-thinning medicine, during pregnancy, or for someone who is weak. Do not stop any blood pressure medicine because of it.
