Virechan Treatment in Pune
Purgation therapy for pitta complaints such as hyperacidity and skin disease. Best taken in October and November.
In brief
Virechan is the Panchakarma procedure of therapeutic purgation, which Ayurveda uses to clear excess pitta through the bowel. At Shree Skin & Hair Clinic on Senapati Bapat Road, Pune, Dr. Nileema Shisode, M.D. (Ayurved) in Kayachikitsa-Panchakarma, advises it for hyperacidity, skin disease and obesity, before planning a pregnancy, and as a general cleanse. The clinic recommends October and November as the best time for it.
What Virechan is used for
- Hyperacidity and acid reflux
- Skin disease
- Obesity
- Preparation before planning a pregnancy
- A general seasonal cleanse of the body
How Virechan is done
- A consultation and history
- Preparation over several days: medicated ghee by mouth, then oil massage and steam
- On the day, the purgative medicine is taken in the morning. Bowel motions follow through the day, and you rest
- A set diet afterwards that returns to normal food in steps
Before and after
Keep the day of the procedure and the day after free, and stay near a toilet. Drink what you are told to and eat only what the diet allows. Most people feel light and a little tired for a day or two.
When Virechan is not advised
Virechan is not given during pregnancy, in weakness or dehydration, or during a fever or diarrhoea. People with bleeding from the bowel or other bowel disease are assessed first. Where the main complaint is of vata, such as joint or back pain, Basti is usually the better choice.

October and November, in Sharad ritu, the autumn season. That is when Ayurveda advises it and when the clinic recommends it.
Does Virechan help hyperacidity?
Ayurveda uses Virechan for hyperacidity because acidity is a complaint of pitta. One patient of the clinic reported relief for at least two years after it. Results differ from person to person.
Do I need to take leave from work?
Keep the day of the procedure free and take the next day lightly. The preparation in the days before can usually be fitted around work.
