Basti Treatment in Pune
Medicated enema for complaints of vata: the joints, back and bones. A course of 8 to 30 days, 1 to 1½ hours a day.
In brief
Basti is the Panchakarma procedure in which medicated oil or a herbal decoction is given as an enema. Ayurveda regards it as the main treatment for vata and uses it for the joints, back and bones. At Shree Skin & Hair Clinic on Senapati Bapat Road, Pune, Dr. Nileema Shisode, M.D. (Ayurved) in Kayachikitsa-Panchakarma, gives Basti as a course of 8 to 30 days, with a sitting of 1 to 1½ hours each day.
What Basti is used for
- Joint pain, including knee pain and arthritis
- Back pain and sciatica
- Bone health, including osteoporosis
- Weight loss, as part of a programme
- Fertility care and care for healthy ageing
How a Basti course runs
- A consultation, where the doctor decides the kind of Basti, the medicines and the number of days
- Each day begins with a local oil massage and fomentation
- The Basti is given while you lie on your side. It takes a few minutes and is not painful
- You rest for a while and then go home. The whole sitting takes 1 to 1½ hours
Oil Basti and decoction Basti are usually given on alternating days in a set pattern.
During the course
Come at the same time each day and try not to miss days, because the course works as a whole. Eat light, warm food, and avoid long travel and heavy exertion while it runs.
When Basti is not advised
Basti is not given during diarrhoea or a fever, in bleeding from the bowel, or soon after abdominal surgery. During pregnancy it is given only if the doctor advises it. Sudden severe pain, weakness in a leg or loss of bladder control need a hospital, not a Basti course.
