Ayurvedic Steam Bath (Swedana) in Pune
Steam medicated with herbs, given after oil massage to bring on perspiration.
In brief
Swedana is the Ayurvedic steam bath: steam medicated with herbs, given after an oil massage so that the body perspires. It is the second step of preparation for the main Panchakarma procedures. At Shree Skin & Hair Clinic on Senapati Bapat Road, Pune, it follows Abhyangam on the advice of Dr. Nileema Shisode, M.D. (Ayurved).
Why steam is given
After the oil massage, steam opens the pores and brings on perspiration, which Ayurveda regards as one of the ways the body rids itself of waste. It also eases stiffness. Together, oil and steam prepare the body for Vamanam, Virechan or Basti.
What happens
- You have your oil massage first
- You sit or lie in the steam cabinet with your head outside it, so the head stays cool
- Steam is given until you perspire well, and stopped at once if you feel uncomfortable
- You are wiped down and rest before leaving
When a steam bath is not advised
Steam is avoided during pregnancy, a fever or dehydration, and for people with heart disease or uncontrolled blood pressure. Drink water afterwards, and tell the therapist straight away if you feel faint.
