In brief
PRP, platelet-rich plasma, is prepared from a small sample of your own blood and placed into the scalp, where the growth factors in the platelets support the hair roots. At Shree Skin & Hair Clinic on Senapati Bapat Road, Pune, Dr. Nileema Shisode, M.D. (Ayurved), PGDCC, uses PRP for thinning hair, usually together with hair rejuvenation therapy and the dermaroller.
What happens in a sitting
- A small sample of blood is taken from your arm
- It is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma
- The scalp is cleaned and numbed
- The plasma is placed into the thinning areas with fine injections, or with a dermaroller
The scalp may feel tender for a day. You can return to normal activity straight away.
Who PRP suits
It suits hair that is thinning but still present: early pattern hair loss in men and women, and hair that is slow to recover. It is given as a series of sittings spaced some weeks apart.
When PRP is not the right choice
PRP is not done in blood or platelet disorders, for people taking blood-thinning medicine, during pregnancy, or where there is a scalp infection. It does not regrow hair on skin that has been bald for years.
