Shirobasti is an Ayurvedic treatment in which warm medicated oil is held in contact with the scalp inside a tall cap fitted around the head. What Shirobasti is used for

At the clinic its main use is hair fall, where the cause lies in an imbalance of vata. It is usually part of a wider plan for the hair that includes diet and internal medicine.

What happens in a sitting

  1. You sit upright on a chair
  2. A tall cap, open at the top, is fitted around the head and sealed at its lower edge
  3. Warm medicated oil is poured in until it covers the scalp, and is kept warm
  4. After 15 to 30 minutes the oil is drained and the head, neck and shoulders are massaged

Before and after

Come with clean hair. Afterwards keep the head covered and warm, and wash your hair when the doctor has said to.

When Shirobasti is not advised

It is postponed during a fever, a cold or a scalp infection, and where there are wounds on the scalp. If hair is being lost in patches or very suddenly, the cause should be found first: see hair fall treatment.

What is the difference between Shirodhara and Shirobasti?

In Shirodhara the oil flows over the forehead in a stream for 45 minutes. In Shirobasti the oil is held still over the whole scalp inside a cap for 15 to 30 minutes. The clinic uses Shirobasti specifically for hair fall.

How many sittings of Shirobasti are needed?

It is given over several days. The number depends on the person and is decided at the consultation.
