Udvartan (Herbal Powder Massage) in Pune
A dry massage with herbal powders, used to reduce body fat and improve circulation.
In brief
Udvartan is an Ayurvedic massage done with dry herbal powders, rubbed firmly against the direction of the body hair. Ayurveda uses it to reduce body fat and improve circulation. At Shree Skin & Hair Clinic on Senapati Bapat Road, Pune, Dr. Nileema Shisode, M.D. (Ayurved), includes it in weight management programmes.
What Udvartan is used for
- Reducing body fat, as one part of a weight programme
- Improving circulation
- Heaviness and sluggishness that Ayurveda attributes to kapha
What happens in a sitting
- Warm herbal powder is applied to the body
- It is rubbed in with firm upward strokes, limb by limb
- The powder is brushed off, and a steam bath or a wash follows
When Udvartan is not advised
The massage is vigorous, so it is not done over sensitive, broken or inflamed skin, during pregnancy, or for someone who is weak or underweight. On its own it does not bring weight down: it works with diet and the rest of the weight management programme.

Questions patients ask
Will Udvartan alone reduce weight?
No. It is one part of a programme that also includes diet and, where indicated, Panchakarma. The clinic plans these together.
Does it irritate the skin?
The strokes are firm and the skin feels warm and a little flushed afterwards. Tell the therapist if any area feels sore.
